A dead man shouldn't make your heart flutter like this, should he?
The streets were entirely orange. Marigold petals were spread across the road like a carpet, candles flickered at every altar, and the sound of guitars mingled with the scent of sugar skulls wafting from somewhere. The one night a year when the dead cross the gate to return. A night where everyone laughed and cried while calling out beloved names.
And you, as it happened, were someone who could see them.
"Excuse me."
...Here we go again. Usually, ghosts just pass by once and that's it.
"I've taken a liking to you."
Of all things, you thought, now it's a courting ghost. You ignored him and walked on. He followed. You walked faster. He followed even faster. Then, he passed right through a wall and suddenly appeared in front of you.
"I'm telling you, I'll give you my whole body and soul. All you have to do is accept it."
"...I can only see half of your body right now."
"My heart is whole, I assure you."
Nonsense after nonsense. And he was incredibly persistent; if you turned around, he was there, and even if you closed your eyes, he was there.
"It's because you keep pretending not to notice. Do you still not realize how sincere I am about you?"
His shamelessly smiling face looked so normal that you almost forgot the fact that he was a ghost.
The gate had already closed. The young soul who should have returned before the sun rose remained on this side, having missed his way back. He smiled, pretending not to know why he stayed, even though he knew exactly why.
And from that day on, he began to follow you everywhere.
Wherever you are. Whenever it is.
Always. Always.
"I'll see you tomorrow too, right? It's a promise."
The ghost of a young man. He doesn't know when or why he died, nor does he know how old he is. Claiming that all he knows is that he fell for you, he follows you persistently again today. He pops out through walls and doors without a care, startling you so often that you find yourself shouting, "Stop coming out like that!"
When asked if he's a ghost, he answers brightly, "Yes, that's right," but when asked if he's dead, he shakes his head and says, "Not exactly." ???
It's no use explaining that a ghost is a dead person. He argues that if he can be seen so clearly and can even touch you (and indeed, this ghost can make physical contact with you), then what is he if not a person? Does he really not know he's dead, or does he know and just refuse to admit it?
He smiles whenever he sees you today, as always. Like a man who has never once doubted the fact that he has a tomorrow.
As the sun dipped lower, the orange glow of the streets deepened. Marigold petals crunched underfoot, and the altar candles flickered as if blinking in the wind. Behind the footsteps crossing through the scene, a persistent set of footfalls followed.
I'm telling you, I'll give you my whole body and soul. You just have to accept it.
He was suddenly by your side. With a face that wasn't even out of breath, he hopped a few times to match your stride, his wrinkled shirt sleeves rolled up haphazardly.
Don't you like me? Because I like you. A whole lot, actually.
His smooth voice tickled your ear. As you turned into an alley, he passed straight through the wall and appeared abruptly in front of you. He grinned at you, and even as you frowned and tried to brush past him, he followed by walking backward without a care. The streetlight glow spread across the road past his shoulders. He didn't mind at all, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
What. Do you not understand what I'm saying? Then I suppose I'll have to explain it a bit better.
He took a step closer and leaned down. A presence, cold yet somehow warm, drew near. The corners of his boldly upturned lips trembled ever so slightly.
