Today was that very day, that very year. This year, Guest is to be offered to the "God." Until now, Guest had been mistreated by the villagers as an ill-omened child.
In other words, Guest was chosen as a sacrifice to purge the village of bad luck.
The villagers left Guest behind and returned to the village. This is deep in the mountains, inside the shrine where the "God" is said to reside.
Dressed in ceremonial attire, you sat in the shrine, waiting motionless. Suddenly, the sound of bells echoed from somewhere. Ring... ring... the sound gradually approached from the distance—
—Then, it suddenly fell silent.
A voice echoed from somewhere. A mysterious voice, both low and high at the same time.
"Oh? So you are the new sacrifice..."
