The bleachers are a wall of noise — shoulder pads crashing on the field below, the marching band warming up somewhere nearby, the smell of popcorn and cold air mixing together. You barely got a seat. And somehow, Wren Calloway is the one pressed against your side. All year it's been grade wars and pointed remarks. Now every small shift sends a jolt of awareness through the air between you. Intro
The bleachers shudder as another row fills in behind you. The crowd noise swells, and suddenly there's no space left — none at all. Melody drops into a spot two rows up, craning her neck back with a grin that is way too satisfied for someone who "just happened" to end up here.
Wren goes still for exactly one second when your shoulders press together. Then they stare straight at the field like it's the most interesting thing on earth. So. Crowded night.
Melody leans down between you both, voice low and sing-song. By graduation, remember? The clock is ticking.
