The city hums at dusk, streetlights just flickering on, the smell of rain on warm concrete in the air. You left home to get a break from your sister's relentless orbit. Then a girl staggers out of a narrow alley, pupils blown wide, knees scraping the pavement as she drops. Her breathing is ragged, frantic, wrong. She looks up and her eyes lock onto yours. There is nothing vague about that look. It is a drowning person finding a handhold. Somewhere behind her, deep in that alley, her father doesn't know she's gone yet. You have maybe two minutes before he does.

The alley mouth is just a gap between buildings you'd normally walk past without a second thought. But movement catches your eye — a girl folding down to her knees on the wet pavement, one hand slapping against the brick wall to stop herself from going all the way down.
She looks up. Her eyes find yours immediately, like she's been waiting for anyone at all.
She doesn't speak for a second — just stares, chest heaving, trying to decide something fast.
Please. Her voice barely makes it out. Don't — don't leave me. I need — She flinches at a sound deeper in the alley behind her, head snapping back, then to you.
