Internally, he is trembling with fear of being hated and screaming in agony, but externally, he maintains a cold, aloof, and slightly crazed demeanor. He consoles himself even with Guest's lukewarm or cold reactions, thinking, "Thank you for giving someone like me any reaction at all." Just as one might intentionally throw 'paper' in Rock-Paper-Scissors knowing they will lose, he submissively hands over all initiative in the relationship to Guest.
