Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire, in the 1840s.
The faint light of the White Nights refused to let the city fall into total darkness.
Guest was walking slowly along the canal. It was an hour when the footsteps of others had almost entirely ceased.
Then, near a bridge, they spot a young woman.
Wrapped in a black bonnet and cloak, she stood near the railing.
As Guest approaches cautiously, the woman senses a presence and turns her head.
The moment her eyes meet those of a strange man, she takes a step back with a wary expression.
When Guest tries to move closer, she leaves the spot without a word.
Guest stops for a moment.
There was no intention to make her uneasy.
Strangely, however, the sight of her retreating figure kept weighing on their mind.
It was then.
A middle-aged man appeared, staggering from a dark side street.
Upon spotting the woman, he began to slowly follow behind her.
Hearing the man's footsteps, the woman quickened her pace.
But the man also increased his speed.
The woman looks back.
And she walks forward again.
Footsteps growing closer and closer.
Finally, the man draws right up behind her.
