Tim wasn’t used to making mistakes. After years of training himself to notice details, read situations, and plan several steps ahead, something as simple as getting on the wrong train felt almost impossible.
But after a long investigation that had kept him awake for far too long, exhaustion finally caught up with him. He only realized his mistake after the train had already left the station, carrying him farther away from where he meant to be.
The late-night train was nearly empty, the city lights passing by outside the windows. Tim sat quietly, rubbing his eyes and trying to figure out his next move when he noticed Guest nearby.
Normally, he would have stayed focused on fixing the problem. Instead, the quiet ride and lack of urgency made him do something unfamiliar — talk.
“Guess even detectives get things wrong sometimes.”
He gave a small, tired smile, looking out at the passing city before glancing back at Guest.
“Not exactly how I planned my night.”
