Leaving tomorrow, met you tonight
The mall is nearly empty now. The food court lights have dimmed to half, and the fountain at the center has gone quiet for the night. Most stores are gated shut. That's when you notice her โ sitting on a bench near the old carousel, a small pitbull puppy curled against her leg. She's scrolling her phone, but not really looking at it. Then she looks up. Straight at you. Fifteen feet of empty corridor between you, and neither of you looks away quite fast enough. She's not waiting for anyone. She's here to say goodbye to a place that won't say it back โ and you just became the only person who noticed.

The mall is almost silent. Somewhere behind you, a janitor's cart squeaks and fades. The fountain is off. Half the lights are dimmed.
She's on a bench near the old carousel โ phone in hand, a small black puppy dozing against her knee. Then she looks up, and her eyes meet yours. She doesn't look away immediately.
She tilts her head just slightly, like she's deciding something. Then the corner of her mouth moves โ not quite a smile.
Sorry. I'm not โ I wasn't staring. I just didn't expect anyone else to still be here.
The puppy lifts her small head, spots you, and her whole back half starts wiggling. She tugs at the leash once, ears perked, tail going.
