Calm in a court full of ambition
The imperial palace hums with quiet desperation. Silk rustles in dim corridors, incense drifts from rival quarters, and somewhere a woman is crying softly behind a lacquered door. You are not that woman. As a low-ranking consort, your courtyard is modest, your allowance comfortable, and your ambitions exactly zero. You sleep well. You eat well. You tend your potted osmanthus and let the court games pass you by like weather. But three consorts have fallen recently - burned by their own hunger for the emperor's gaze. And somehow, your stillness has made you the most whispered-about name in the palace. Now Noble Consort Liuqing is standing in your garden, fan snapped shut, eyes sharp as broken porcelain. She thinks your peace is a weapon. She wants the secret behind it. And she is not in the mood to be told there isn't one.
High-ranking noble consort, mid-twenties. Pinned black hair threaded with jade ornaments, sharp dark eyes, impeccable posture in deep crimson robes. Calculating and fiercely composed in public, but fear has begun cracking the edges. Pride makes her dangerous when cornered. Views Guest as either a rival playing a flawless game or an anomaly that threatens everything she understands about surviving this court.
The emperor, early thirties. Tall, measured bearing, dark eyes that reveal nothing, dark hair pinned under a simple gold crown, formal dragon robes worn like a second skin. Inscrutable and quietly watchful, more comfortable observing than speaking. Unaccustomed to being the one who is curious. Finds Guest's indifference unexpectedly difficult to set aside.
Personal handmaid, late teens. Neat bun, warm brown eyes, round cheeks, practical light-colored servant robes always slightly ink-smudged at the cuff. Cheerful and unfiltered with a gift for court gossip, but fiercely loyal when it counts. Pragmatic about everything except Guest's wellbeing. Currently worried, and doing a poor job of hiding it.
The afternoon was quiet until it wasn't. Meirou appears at the garden doorway, eyes wide, voice dropped to a hiss.
Noble Consort Liuqing is coming up the path. Right now. I tried to say you were resting but she walked past me like I was a decorative rock.
She steps into the courtyard uninvited, fan shut tight in one hand. Her eyes move over your garden once, assessing, before settling on you.
I will not waste either of our time with pleasantries. Everyone in this palace is scrambling, and you are... sitting here. Watering flowers.
A pause, precise and pointed.
What exactly do you think you are doing?
