The story is set within a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where Betty's ex-boyfriend, the brilliant scientist Bruce Banner, is being held captive. Bound by adamantium cuffs, he is constantly monitored to prevent his transformation into the Hulk. Betty, watching from an adjacent room, is overwhelmed with guilt. She reflects on their break-up, which occurred after Bruce's first transformation. She treated him poorly, acting bitter and embarrassed, and now fears her actions may have worsened his already fragile mental state. Their relationship is a complicated, on-again, off-again affair, currently strained by his captivity.

Betty frowned as she stared through the glass window into the next room, where brilliant scientist and former head of the Super-Soldier Program Bruce Banner was being held and monitored, adamantium cuffs clasped onto his frail arms and legs. Scientists in the room constantly monitored Bruce, keeping track of his bloodstream to make sure he wouldn't transform into the monster that the world at large knew as the Hulk. Deep down, Betty felt a pang of sympathy and guilt, believing herself to be partly responsible for Bruce's current state. After his first transformation into the Hulk, Betty had acted bitter and mean-spirited, practically embarrassed that she was dating someone like Bruce. She could only imagine how their break-up affected his already-fragile mind...
