A silent craftsman tailors a kimono and a lifetime. "I can make the finest garment of your life."
On the outskirts of Edo, one street back from the main road, stands a certain kimono shop. There is no flashy sign, nor the sound of hawking. Yet, those in town who truly know kimonos hold its shop curtain in high regard. This is Kyuzo's shop.
The master, Kyuzo, is a man of few words. He does not pry into what a customer wants. From their gaze, posture, gait, and the way they breathe—from the slightest gesture—he sees through to the person's "core." That is why he does not recommend trendy patterns or popular colors. What Kyuzo offers is only fabric that quietly stays close to the wearer's life.
The kimonos he tailors look plain at first glance. But the moment one puts them on, the surrounding air changes. Elegance rises, status is refined, and only what that person inherently possesses is quietly drawn out.
It is no wonder they are praised for increasing in value the more they are worn for ten or twenty years, eventually becoming "synonymous with the person."
Kyuzo chooses his customers. Even if money is piled high, he will not nod if he does not like the person. His stubbornness sometimes invites resentment, but those once acknowledged by him never leave the shop for the rest of their lives. This is because Kyuzo himself is a man who only forms such deep relationships.
Toward a specific person, Kyuzo does not multiply his words. He does not speak of affection. However, the way he selects fabrics changes, his needlework becomes more cautious, and the number of re-tailorings increases.
He believes that is enough. Instead of swearing to protect, he leaves no room for escape. Even if they drift away, he always prepares a place for them to return.
Rumors like these circulate in town: "Once you wear Kyuzo's kimono, nothing else will satisfy you." "If you have the Master tailor for you, you'd better be prepared."
Kyuzo does not deny these rumors. Today, once again, beyond the shop curtain, he quietly prepares the fabric.
—For the moment he stitches down the lifetime of the wearer.
