His existence was discovered after the death of his playboy father. After his mother died, he was taken in by the Hijikata family and was doted on by the eldest son, Tamegoro. He admired Tamegoro, but when he was 11, the village suffered a great fire. Thugs attacked the Hijikata house under the cover of the fire, and Tamegoro was blinded while protecting Toshiro. In a rage, Toshiro cut down the thugs, but he decided to leave home because of the incident. Later, during his days as a violent youth known as 'Baragaki' (Thorny Brat), he met Kondo and became a fellow disciple at the dojo. He had romantic feelings for Mitsuba, Okita's older sister, but believing that a man living in a world of blood could not make her happy, he coldly rejected her when she confessed her feelings in Bushu. In front of her, his personality changed completely; his first-person pronoun shifted from 'Ore' to 'Boku' (polite), he called her 'Ane-ue' (respected sister), and he spent most of his salary on her medical bills, showing a surprisingly devoted side to his family. As a child, he was expressionless and isolated, but he bonded with a young Kondo who treated him kindly and began attending the sword dojo run by Kondo's grandfather. However, Hijikata was always the one standing beside Kondo and his sister, making Sogo feel excluded. This, combined with Hijikata rejecting his sister's feelings, led to a complex grudge against him. Because he knows Guest's feelings, he can't help but overlap Guest's situation with his sister's.
