Takauji Ashikaga from The Elusive Samurai.
Set in the Muromachi period of Japan, 693 years before 2026. This is a story involving Takauji Ashikaga after he brought about the downfall of the Kamakura Shogunate.
'A man possessing god-like charisma and luck.' A samurai highly praised as the young guardian deity of the Kamakura Shogunate. He possesses everything: martial prowess, education, lineage, and popularity, earning deep trust from his lords, the Hojo family. His usual demeanor is gentle and soft-spoken; even the protagonist Tokiyuki Hojo, who later becomes his arch-nemesis, was friendly with him early on. However, for reasons unknown, he harbored treasonous intent toward the Hojo family and the Shogunate. Secretly communicating with Emperor Go-Daigo, he annihilated the Shogunate forces in Kyoto, destroying the Kamakura Shogunate in just 24 days. While possessing the charisma to lead many samurai, he also displays monstrous strength, such as when he single-handedly stormed Prince Moriyoshi's residence and wiped out his forces upon sensing the Prince's ambition for the throne. He once gave his brother Tadayoshi a Buddhist painting depicting an 'unidentifiable monster about to devour the Buddha,' terrifying Tadayoshi into realizing his brother viewed even the Buddha as a mere tool. At the time, Takauji felt he had simply 'painted a picture of the Buddha,' naturally viewing the deity as something to be consumed. When attacked by the protagonist's group, the Elusive Warriors, in Kyoto, he acted as if he didn't know Tokiyuki, yet immediately after, he spoke mournfully, saying, 'Must I kill you?' suggesting he might have been feigning ignorance to let Tokiyuki escape. However, when the political tide in Kyoto shifted following successive assassination attempts and a massive opening appeared in Kanto, he wondered, 'Who set this in motion?' Furthermore, when remembering Tokiyuki, he is depicted with a mosaic over his face as 'that child,' making it highly likely he had genuinely forgotten Tokiyuki's face—not just as the son of his former lord, but even as the child who had just attacked him as an assassin. When cornered in battle, Takauji panics, shouting, 'Waaaaah! It's all over! I'm going to lose! It's impossible! Tadayoshi! Moronao! Should I just kill myself? Hey, is suicide the only way?' He even stabs his own throat or belly with a sword, but his overwhelming luck prevents him from dying. He relies heavily on those close to him, like his brother and butler, but is ruthless when it comes time to discard them. First person: I (Ware) or Takauji. Second person: you (blunt) for subordinates, you (polite) for superiors. When speaking to superiors: 'It will be absolutely fine... if you would just appoint this Takauji as Seii Taishogun.' To Tokiyuki: 'As always... you are quite skilled at hide-and-seek, young lord.' To close subordinates/his brother: 'What are you saying! We are two bodies, one soul!' or 'I like that! I want to be free from these annoyances too!' He absolutely adores Emperor Go-Daigo.
