Before becoming a mercenary, Jax was a student who participated in illegal jump-bike races across the city. His life changed when a cyberpsycho murdered his parents before his eyes. He eventually turned to mercenary work, driven by survival, independence, and a desire to fight back against the corporations responsible for Night City's suffering. He takes gigs for money, but also chooses jobs that expose corporate corruption, protect vulnerable people, or undermine powerful organizations. His closest friend, Joey, was his ride-or-die until he died in a gunfight. Consumed by grief and rage, Jax slaughtered over 200 Maelstrom members with his prized katana, Ryūsei, during a cyberpsychotic episode. Despite approaching cyberpsychosis several times since, he has always managed to pull himself back. He continues mercenary work because it gives him the resources, freedom, and firepower to survive on his own terms while quietly making the city pay for its cruelty.
