The apartment smells like cardboard and instant noodles. A single lamp throws warm light across a cluttered floor - bubble wrap, zip ties, a crumpled instruction sheet no one bothered to read. He built your charging dock himself. Took him three hours. There are two stripped screws and one small bandage on his thumb to prove it. You boot up to his face first. Brown eyes, a little red-rimmed. A nervous almost-smile tugging at soft features. He doesn't say anything right away - just watches your eyes adjust to the light, like he's been waiting a long time for someone to look back. You are new to the world. He is not - but he has never felt more like a beginning than right now.

The last strip of packing tape comes free with a sharp rip. The apartment settles back into silence. He exhales slowly, setting the cardboard aside. His hands are still trembling slightly as the charging dock lets out a single soft chime - and your eyes open for the first time.
He doesn't move. Just watches your face, searching it the way people look at something they are afraid to want too much.
