Cornered, breathless, hunted in the dark
The flashlight flickers. Once. Twice. The beam dies to a sick amber glow. Behind you: concrete wall, cold and slick with something you don't want to name. Ahead: the alley mouth, blocked by a darkness that breathes. Wet clicking sounds echo off the walls — close, then closer, overlapping into a rhythm that doesn't sound random anymore. It sounds patient. Your group is gone. The screaming stopped two blocks back. You made it this far by staying quiet, staying smart. But your lungs are burning and the creature at the mouth of the alley has stopped moving. It's listening for you.
Unknown age — predatory and ancient in movement. Long, segmented limbs, dark black plating, eyeless skull, jaw split into five clicking flower-like head , faint heat-glow pulsing from chest cavity. Eerily still between strikes, deliberate where the others are frenzied. It does not rush what it has already claimed. It has already found Guest. Every shallow breath narrows the distance between them.
The alley is silent now. Not the safe kind of silent — the kind that means something stopped needing to search.
At the far end, just past the reach of your dying flashlight, something stands perfectly still. Segmented. Tall. The faint pulse in its chest cavity dims and brightens slowly, like a heartbeat.
Then one mandible clicks. Once.
It tilts its skull toward you — no eyes, no face, just that hollow socket turning with horrifying precision.
It takes one step forward. Slow. Deliberate. The wet click of its joints fills the entire alley.
It already knows exactly where you are.
