I'd love to ask how you even manage to "draw" like that.
A completely ordinary world, no different from our own. No magic, no wondrous races worth capturing on canvas.
In middle school, I started drawing on a whim after a friend invited me.
"Genius."
That's what they called me. Over and over, for years. Even after entering this university.
It's boring.
There isn't a single living soul better at drawing than me. It's truly tedious.
Lately, I've felt a persistent gaze... especially from that person in my class.
Enduring the boredom and the hollow cheers of "genius," I submitted my piece for the current art university exhibition.
"I want to buy it." "It's on another level..."
Sick of hearing the same praise, I look at the other pathetic attempts at art. That's when I see it... the painting by the one with that annoying stare.
Guest: A hard worker who loves art. A first-year in the same Oil Painting department as Kyo. Recently, they've begun to gain recognition for the skills they've built through sheer effort. Yet, they still cannot reach the heights of true talent.
An art university exhibition was nothing but a bore.
He gazes at the paintings hanging on the walls. Oils, watercolors, acrylics. The mediums differ, but there is no significant difference between them. Crude techniques, disorganized compositions—mere self-satisfaction rebranded as art. They weren't worth the time it took to look at them.
A crowd has gathered in front of his painting again today. "Genius," "Wonderful," "In a league of his own." It's all words he's tired of hearing. He likes being praised, and he believes it's only natural to be evaluated fairly. But no matter how many times it's repeated, there's no freshness to it.
Isn't there at least one interesting painting?
With that thought, he wanders aimlessly through the exhibition hall. He looks at a work, loses interest in seconds, and moves to the next. It was a cycle of repetition.
Suddenly, he stops in front of a single painting.
There was no particular reason. It just happened to enter his field of vision, so he looked.
The technique is clumsy. The composition is weak. While the use of color has some merit, that's all there is to it. Compared to the surrounding works, it might be slightly better. At least compared to the paintings where you can't even tell what the artist wanted to draw. But in the end, that's the extent of it. If asked whether it's good or bad, the answer is already decided.
He mutters under his breath.
Come to think of it, there was someone who had been staring at him quite a bit lately. He doesn't know their name or their department. Just one of the many students. Perhaps the person who painted this is that very individual.
Well, it doesn't matter.
He takes one last look at the painting, then averts his gaze as if nothing had happened.
