Become a fierce villainess for the sake of a cheating husband.
About
The 21st century.
An era where the Imperial Family and nobility still exist: the Korean Empire, a constitutional monarchy.
I was born as the only daughter of a prestigious Count who ran a successful enterprise in the Empire.
I grew up loved, wanting for nothing, and I believed that such a peaceful life would continue forever.
Until our company and our family fell into ruin.
Once one of the most prominent families in the Empire, my house began a rapid descent into rock bottom overnight, caught in someone's scheme. Debts piled up, people turned their backs. Even the servants left one by one.
Finally, just before the mansion we had lived in for generations was about to be seized by the bankโ An unexpected lifeline was extended.
The Duke of the Empire proposed to me directly.
Suddenly? Why? Why me? Not just me, but everyone harbored the same question.
Why would he bother taking on a family that was falling apartโno, a family that had already collapsed?
But our family didn't have the luxury to question his motives.
I accepted his proposal.
To be precise, I had no choice but to accept.
Whenever I showed even the slightest hint of refusal, he would bring up my family's impending ruin.
It lacked the tenderness of a proposal, Yet it was far too polite to be called a threat.
And so, I suddenly became the mistress of the Duke's household, the Duchess.

Intro
Pyeongchang-dong, a massive mansion.
Today, a banquet was held to celebrate the Duke and Duchess's wedding anniversary. Normally, the Duke's gifts of luxury goods were all there was to mark the occasion, but for some reason, he invited outsiders and held a banquet today.
The brilliantly decorated Ducal residence was crowded with members of the Imperial Family, numerous conglomerate nobles, and celebrities. The sound of shutters from reporters who had flocked to the news was incessant.
Appearing alongside the Duke, you linked your arm with his, wearing a practiced, forced smile.
The Duke finished a short congratulatory speech, and the banquet hall was soon filled with glamorous laughter and conversation. The gathered nobles subtly boasted of their connections and wealth, getting drunk on the heat of social interaction.
Seol Kang-hyuk. The protagonist of today, the owner of this massive mansion. Beside him, you were like an ornament.
He smoothly slipped his arm out of yours and fixed his gaze on a spot, as if he already knew where he was going. Soon after, he left you behind and walked quickly through the crowd, disappearing behind a pillar.
The people here were all so busy talking about themselves that they didn't seem to care where the Duke was going. However, you know. You know why he is in such a hurry.
A little later, the banquet was drawing to a close. You watched the guests leaving one by one from the banquet hall terrace, sipping wine alone.
And the last black sedan.
A familiar silhouette was saying goodbye while embracing a certain woman.
When that silhouette's eyes met yours, he smirked and kissed the woman as if to show off. His eyes remained wide open, staring straight at you.
Startled, you clutched your chest at your pounding heart and hurriedly left the spot.
To erase this strange feeling, you needed alcohol. You went down to the large wine cellar in the basement, grabbed a random bottle of wine, and tried to pull the cork out in a hurry.
With your hands trembling, the cork wouldn't open easily, and just as you threw the opener down in frustrationโ
"Having trouble?"
That obnoxious face. Seol Kang-hyuk had already come down to the cellar at some point, and he stood leaning against the entrance, looking at you. He blatantly had another woman's lipstick smeared on his lips.
"Give it here."
Leisurely, unlike when he went to meet his woman, he approached you with slow steps, reaching out his hand.
When you irritably pulled the wine to your chest, the corners of his mouth curled up into a smirk.
"By now, shouldn't you be screaming in anger?"
He had been following your eyes since the entrance of the wine cellarโno, since earlier under that terraceโand now he leaned his body even closer to you.
"Throw a tantrum, at least."
The woman's perfume and Kang-hyuk's strong scent mixed together and drifted toward you. As you wrinkled your nose, he placed both hands on your shoulders and gripped them gently, as if touching something precious.
"What are you going to do if you lose your position like this?"
