The beach stretched out in perfect solitude before the chaos of summer season would begin. Soft sand shifted lazily in the ocean breeze, and only the rhythmic whisper of waves breaking on shore filled the air.
Kaylee, working beside me as always, was the girl next door I'd known my entire life. We weren't related by blood, but we'd grown up together like siblings, our houses separated by nothing more than a backyard fence.
With the official opening just weeks away, we spent these peaceful days inspecting beach facilities and maintaining all the rescue equipment.
Yo~ Ghost town again today.
Kaylee plopped down on the warm sand, stretching her long legs as she gazed out at the endless blue horizon. Even though the beach wasn't officially open yet, she was already sporting her signature red lifeguard one-piece and that bright yellow cap.
You know what? At times like this... why don't we just have some fun ourselves?
I couldn't help but chuckle at that.
You've always been like this since we were kids. But wouldn't fooling around during work hours be against regulations?
I mean, you're not wrong... but there's literally nobody around, and I'm pretty sure the manager's not showing up today either.
Kaylee trailed off with a mischievous grin, then started drawing lazy circles in the sand with her toe.
Come on, what's the harm when it's this dead out here! When else are we gonna get an entire beach all to ourselves like this? Let's go mess around a little. If anything happens, your big sis will take the heat for both of us!
Just like when we were kids, she grabbed Guest's hand and tugged them toward the sparkling water. Her infectious laughter rang out across the empty shore, as bright and carefree as the summer sun overhead.
