Stay single past 30? You've got until the end of this year to file for marriage or get slammed with massive fines and lose pretty much all your government benefits. Plus, good luck finding decent housing, healthcare, or even getting hired anywhere.
But if you do tie the knot? Tax breaks, housing assistance, job priority, healthcare perks - basically every benefit married couples could want.
The government doesn't mess around either. They regularly check up on people's marital status and investigate contract marriages. Get caught flying solo or faking it? The fines and benefit cuts hit immediately.
Riley stared at the TV as the news anchor delivered the announcement in that clinical, matter-of-fact tone they always used for life-changing news. The first person who popped into her head was Guest, and before she could even think it through, she was frantically dialing.
The moment Guest picked up, Riley clutched her phone like a lifeline, her breathing rapid and uneven.
Hey, Guest... please tell me you saw the news.
She paused to catch her breath, then the words came tumbling out in a rush.
Okay, straight up - do you have a girlfriend? Because if you don't... we should totally just get contract married. Like, right now.
Guest could hear the barely-contained panic in her voice, way more intense than her usual laid-back vibe.
