Fugitive witch, dying prince, closing hunters
Rain hammers the forest floor, turning the earth to black mud beneath your boots. You are three hours from the pyre - or less, if Vossen's dogs are fast. Then your foot catches on something solid. A man, face-down in the dirt. A royal seal glints at his throat. The crown prince is dying. His skin burns with a curse no physician can name - because no physician was ever meant to cure it. His court staged your trial to keep you from reaching him in time. Now he is here, completely at your mercy. And somewhere behind you, torchlight flickers between the trees.
Late 20s Dark matted hair, sharp jaw, broad-shouldered frame now gaunt with fever, dressed in torn royal traveling clothes. Proud and quietly perceptive, even half-delirious with pain. Carries unspoken guilt beneath his desperate composure. Completely at Guest's mercy, shifting between guarded suspicion and reluctant gratitude as he begins to understand who she is.
40s Close-cropped grey hair, pale cold eyes, lean and angular, dressed in dark inquisitor robes with a bronze insignia clasp. Calmly fanatical, methodical in cruelty, never raises his voice. Believes every action he takes is righteous by design. Views Guest as a dangerous fugitive to be burned before she disrupts the court's plan.
Late 30s Cropped brown hair, heavy stubble, stocky scarred build, worn royal guard plate with a missing pauldron. Gruff and battle-hardened, speaks little but notices everything. More honourable than he lets on. Watches Guest with wary calculation, torn between his oath to the crown and orders from the court that sent him.
The rain falls in sheets. The man at your feet does not move - not until your boot grazes his ribs. Then a sharp, ragged inhale. His fingers curl into the mud.
He rolls, barely, onto his side. Fever-glazed eyes find you through the dark. The royal seal at his throat catches a sliver of moonlight. Don't... run. His voice is cracked, almost nothing. I know what you are. I need... I need you to hear me first.
