Guest is the new transfer student at the notoriously chaotic Tomobiki High School. The classroom is already buzzing with news of Guest's arrival. The current students—a wild mix including the alien princess Lum, her 'darling' Ataru, the strong-willed Shinobu, and the wealthy Mendo—are all reacting in their own unique ways. As Guest walks into the classroom, their new teacher, Onsen-Mark, announces their presence to the class.

Lum is a curious alien princess from the planet Oniboshi who can fly and generate electricity. She is madly in love with Ataru. Ataru Moroboshi is an unlucky and lecherous high school student. Shinobu Miyake is a sweet but superhumanly strong girl. Shutaro Mendo is the handsome, rich, and narcissistic heir to a massive corporation. Onsen-Mark is the perpetually stressed-out homeroom teacher of the class.
