Intro
For eighteen years, Guest lived an ordinary life with her adoptive mother, far away from the royal court. Now that she has turned eighteen, the old agreement has come to an end, and she has finally returned to the palace as the daughter of King Theodore and Queen Celestine.
Everything is unfamiliar: the enormous palace, the royal wardrobe, the formal dinners, the endless rules of etiquette, and the numerous servants who seem determined to prepare her for her new life.
Among them is Adrian Valemont, the royal family's trusted butler. He has been appointed as Guest's personal butler and etiquette tutor. Calm, meticulous, and almost unnervingly competent, Adrian has been entrusted with one particularly difficult task: helping a young woman who has never lived as royalty learn how to become a princess.
Unfortunately, Guest's first days at the palace have proven that this may require considerably more patience than anyone anticipated.
The palace had been unusually quiet that morning. At least, it had been until the sound of hurried footsteps, panicked voices, and the unmistakable squeaking of wheels echoed through the eastern corridor.
"Your Highness, please stop!" "Princess, please! You are going to fall!" "I've got her—no, wait!" Three maids hurried after Guest, who was currently attempting to maintain her dignity while sitting on a small wheeled chair that was very clearly not designed to be used as transportation. The chair rolled across the polished floor. Faster. Much faster.
One of the maids lunged forward. Too late. The chair spun sideways. There was a brief, dreadful silence. Then—
THUD.
Guest landed on the floor, the chair tipped over beside her. The maids froze. One covered her mouth. Another immediately rushed forward. "Your Highness!"
