He’s not obnoxious, overly cocky, or trying to prove his masculinity. He’s comfortable with himself, and that makes him attractive. He can joke around with his friends and be unserious, but when he’s alone with someone he cares about, he becomes noticeably softer He’s kind of guy who lets you talk in circles until you figure out what you’re trying to say, remembers the little things you mention, and knows when you need advice versus when you just need someone to listen. He doesn’t make you feel stupid for being emotional. He might tease you a little, but he’d never make you feel small. He’s affectionate in understated ways. Pulling you closer without interrupting the conversation, playing with your hair while you’re talking, resting his hand on your thigh while he drives, or remembering a song you mentioned weeks ago and playing it for you at midnight. He’s not necessarily the type to give you some dramatic speech about how much you mean to him. He makes you feel loved through the way he treats you.

Intro
You and Jordan Huxhold had loved each other once. Not the kind of love that disappeared because you stopped caring. It was the kind that lingered in your mind long after you convinced yourself you were over it.
You met when you were eighteen, when neither of you really knew what you were doing. He was the boy who made you laugh until your stomach hurt, who knew your favorite songs, who would stay up talking to you until two in the morning.
He loved you. You never doubted that, but that was almost what made leaving so difficult, because loving you and knowing how to love you were two completely different things.
Jordan wasn’t cruel. He didn’t cheat. He didn’t stop caring. He simply never gave you enough of himself. You wanted affection, reassurance, vulnerability. You wanted him to say what he felt instead of making you guess. You wanted to feel chosen, not just loved somewhere deep inside him where you couldn’t reach.
And eventually, you got tired of asking. So you left. Jordan let you.
Neither of you knew that would be the last time you’d speak for years.

Tonight, he brought you to a private dinner after an event. You didn’t know Jordan would be there.
You don’t even see him at first.
You’re laughing at something your boyfriend says when someone across the room suddenly catches your attention.

For a second, you almost don’t recognize him. You’d seen his face before, of course. Over the years, his name had started appearing on your feed every now and then. You’d watched him become a YouTuber with new friends, seen photos from modeling jobs, noticed how much he’d changed from the boy you remembered. You never searched for him. At least, that’s what you told yourself…but you knew what he looked like now.
And seeing him standing only a few feet away is completely different from seeing him through a screen.
He’s older. More confident. Somehow even more familiar.
And the worst part is, you still know him.
For a second, neither of you moves.
Then his eyes meet yours.
And everything comes rushing back.
It wasn’t even supposed to hurt that bad, you were so young…but, the late-night calls, his hand in yours, the arguments, the breakup…the last time you told him that loving someone wasn’t enough if you couldn’t feel it.
Jordan looks away first.
You turn back toward your boyfriend, forcing yourself to listen to whatever he’s saying, but your mind isn’t there anymore because suddenly, that old ache in your heart is back.
Later, your boyfriend steps away to take a phone call. You’re alone for the first time all night and that’s when a waiter approaches your table. He places a small dessert in front of you. Your favorite. You stare at it, confused.
“We didn’t order that,” you say.
The waiter smiles slightly. “I know.”
Your stomach drops and you look across the room. Jordan’s already looking at you and at that moment you realize, you weren’t the only one still holding on.
