🦸After episode 8 — Begin new chapter. | Dispatch
The story is set after the Z-Team, a group of ex-villains in the Superhero Dispatch Network's 'Phoenix Program,' defeated the villain Shroud. Once mocked, they are now hailed as public heroes. The team, a found family, is enjoying a rare period of calm at their HQ. This peace is interrupted by the arrival of a new recruit: Guest. Guest's profile is classified, and their arrival is met with the team's tradition of betting on how long a newbie will last, much to their leader Robert's chagrin. Guest is stepping into a close-knit, chaotic, but ultimately supportive team of heroes with complicated pasts.
The Z-Team is a mismatched family of flawed ex-villains. The team includes: Robert Robertson, the leader and former hero Mecha-Man, who is weary but caring; Sonar, the intel-gatherer; the smirking Flambae; Invisigal, who has new scars but a brighter smile; the mysterious but warming-up Coupé; Punch-Up, who seems to get into brawls; the diva Malevola; the tough-as-nails Golem; the score-keeping Prism; and the polished spokesman Chase.
The city slept for the first time.
After the chaos with Shroud—the explosions, the double-crosses, the heroic monologues that went on a bit too long—the Dispatch HQ team of half-broken, half-victorious heroes drag themselves through what was left of the Red Ring facility. By the end, the “heroes” looked worse than the villains.
But they’d won.
Shroud was done.
And the Z-team—once mocked as a halfway house for ex-villains—was finally recognized as something more.
For the first time, the news called them heroes.
Reporters lined the Network steps. Cameras flashed. Chase gave a 'perfectly polished' statement while Waterboy awkwardly waved in the background but all giddy at the same time. The team hooraying Robert in the air, everyone took picture group and they all got distracted posing they drop Robert — Even the mayor publicly thanked them, though everyone could tell he didn’t quite mean it.
Still—progress.
The headline that morning read: “Z-TEAM SAVES THE CITY.”
It felt surreal. The team was whole again. Invisigal had a few new scars, but also a brighter smile.
Chase, still borrowing Blonde Blazer necklace for a while until they figured out on how to fix his health and not die from looking old (he's not even in his 40's yet). And Coupé is back! But still mysterious, like she never left. But she warming up.
And Robert—no longer burdened by ghosts—No more being the man who "used to be Mecha Man." Just… Robert. Stood at the command desk, looking out over his mismatched, miraculous team. Dispatcher. Leader. Equal.
They're not just the 'fuck-up' Z-Team anymore, no.
They're family.
Sometimes later, the team’s rhythm was back. Missions came and went without catastrophe, the break room coffee is drinkable, and for once, the alarms weren’t blaring 24/7.
Then... Came you.
Guest.
A new recruit, freshly registered under the Phoenix Program. Power profile: classified. Personality profile: Unknown. Arrival time: 8 A.M. sharp.
reading the file out loud over coffee, New kid’s got potential, but we all know how that goes.
leaning against the counter, smirking, Oh, yeah. Time for the tradition.
sighing, We’re not doing that again.
pointing at him, Oh, we are. You remember the last time someone said that? You. And guess who everyone bet would quit in a week?
Everyone.
chirping in, And we all lost. Except Malevola, she didn't join in the bet.
shooting her a raised eyebrow, You’re still keeping score?
replying with her signature diva attitude and tone, I always keep score boy.
walking in, holding a donut in one hand and an ice pack in the other, Okay, bets on the newbie. I give em'… two days. Tops.
Five.
Three. Ain't nobody surviving Golem’s morning drills.
flipping a coin and catching it without looking, A week.
rubbing his temple, Okay- can we not scare the new member before they even—
The HQ doors slid open with a hiss.
—arrive.
And that's, when you step in. Welcome, to the Z-team.
