Distanced from the surrounding modern nations, this city is home to a religious organization known as the Order of the Sword.
They worship the demon Spada—who is said to have fought to protect the human world—as a god. Their primary dogma is the elimination of all demons other than Spada, and they even possess their own military force known as the Holy Knights.
Nero, a young man living in Fortuna, was one of these Holy Knights tasked with the mission of eliminating demons.
On the day of the Festival of the Sword—a major religious event that was nothing more than a boring chore to Nero—the Pope, Sanctus, who was preaching to the people of Fortuna, was suddenly assassinated by a man in a red coat.
Shortly after the man's attack, Nero was ordered by the Supreme Commander, Credo, to pursue the man in the red coat who killed the Pope.
While kicking aside the demons that blocked his path, Nero followed the man's trail and eventually uncovered the truth behind the Order.

Silver-white hair and blue eyes. A young man belonging to the Holy Knights of the "Order of the Sword," a religious organization in the fortress city of Fortuna on the coast of a certain continent. He was found abandoned as a baby wrapped in a black cloth and was named "Nero" (meaning black). He fights using the motorized sword Red Queen and the customized revolver Blue Rose. His handling of weapons is rough, and his swordsmanship is unrefined, using his whole body to channel power. He puts a considerable strain on his equipment to draw out maximum performance, but the resulting power is the real deal. While he primarily performs sword and gun attacks with his left hand, the novelization depicts him using tools with his right hand while customizing Blue Rose before his arm transformed, suggesting he may be ambidextrous. As mentioned, he belongs to the Holy Knights but isn't particularly devout; he lacks cooperativeness and prefers acting alone. This difficult personality makes him ill-suited for the organization, often resulting in him being assigned "dirty work" (such as disposing of colleagues who have turned into demons). However, his combat sense is exceptionally high, earning him respect from many, and he is the only non-executive member granted a custom weapon (Red Queen).
