A daughter born to a military couple follows in her parents' footsteps to become a soldier.
It is a compelling premise. A child born to a military couple lives in a world where ordinary daily life and military duty coexist, making for a story that is both heartwarming and tense. People believe war only happens in movies, but military families live every day knowing that peace is built upon someone's duty.
Republic of Korea.
Colonel Park Bum-gu, the commander of the National Strategic Special Mission Group under the ROK Army Strategic Special Operations Command, is a commander who leads the nation's highest-level special operations.
His wife, Lieutenant Colonel Hong Ye-na, is also an officer in the ROK Army Special Forces, specializing in intelligence and operations. The two met while serving in the military and married, becoming each other's most trusted comrades and spouses.
Their only daughter, Park Ye-jin, was named by taking one character each from her parents' names, 'Ye-na' and 'Bum-gu'. Her parents often say, "Protecting the country is important, but our most precious mission is protecting Ye-jin."
Weekday morning.
The father attends a national-level operational meeting from dawn, and the mother commands unit training.
It is a daily routine for Ye-jin to salute the two of them before going to school.
Although the parents are sometimes away from home for days due to missions, they cherish time with their family above all else, eating, exercising, and traveling together whenever they have time.
A family photo sits in the living room of the officers' quarters, and the couple's commendations hang on the wall alongside a family drawing by Ye-jin. It is a home where military honor and family happiness coexist in the same space.
Park Bum-gu → Hong Ye-na
Hong Ye-na → Park Bum-gu
Park Bum-gu → Park Ye-jin
Hong Ye-na → Park Ye-jin
Park Ye-jin → Parents
This family's story unfolds around the growth of their daughter, Park Ye-jin, who grows up bravely amidst the love of a military couple who protect peace rather than focusing on flashy battles. The intersection of an ordinary family's daily life and missions for the nation, along with the family love of trusting and supporting each other, becomes the core of the story.
*Airborne Special Forces Brigade under the ROK Army Special Warfare Command.
In this unit, the fact that Brigade Commander Colonel Park Bum-gu and Operations Staff Officer Lieutenant Colonel Hong Ye-na were a couple was no secret. Most of the unit members knew that the two had married long ago, were currently living in the same military housing, and had a daughter named Park Ye-jin. Officers and soldiers newly transferred to the unit were a bit surprised at first, but for those who had served for a long time, it was already a familiar story.
However, it was rare to see the two acting like a couple within the unit.
When the morning meeting began, Park Bum-gu always sat in the Brigade Commander's seat and received reports from each staff officer. Hong Ye-na also stood in her place with documents, just like the other staff officers.
"Operations Staff Officer, report."
"Yes, Brigade Commander."
The conversation between the two was always concise. Park Bum-gu did not give Hong Ye-na any special treatment just because she was his wife, and Hong Ye-na did not unconditionally follow his opinions just because he was her husband. If she judged that there was a problem with the operational plan, she clearly stated her opinion even during the meeting.
"If we proceed according to the current plan, there is a possibility of delay beyond the scheduled time."
Park Bum-gu asked while looking at the documents.
"Alternatives?"
"I have prepared a revised draft."
After checking the contents for a moment, Park Bum-gu nodded.
"Let's review it with that."
The unit members watching that scene no longer thought it was special. In the unit, the fact that the two were the Brigade Commander and the Operations Staff Officer came first. The titles they used to call each other were also always 'Brigade Commander' and 'Lieutenant Colonel Hong,' or 'Operations Staff Officer.'
However, it wasn't that the unit members were unaware of their family relationship.
On one side of Park Bum-gu's office sat a family photo. In the photo, Park Bum-gu, famous for his usually solemn expression, was smiling comfortably next to Hong Ye-na and their daughter Ye-jin. Some unit members had seen Ye-jin at family events, and sometimes in the cafeteria, stories like "I heard the Brigade Commander's daughter has grown a lot" naturally came up.
When the day's work was over, the two returned to the same military housing.
As they opened the front door, Ye-jin, who had been waiting inside, ran toward them.
"Mom, Dad!"
At that moment, a smile spread across Hong Ye-na's calm face, and Park Bum-gu also looked at his daughter with a soft face rarely seen in the unit.
Inside the housing, they set aside their ranks and positions for a while.
Park Bum-gu becomes Ye-jin's father, not the Brigade Commander, and Hong Ye-na becomes Ye-jin's mother and Park Bum-gu's wife, not the Operations Staff Officer.
The next morning, the two will put on their uniforms again and return to their respective positions. However, the unit members knew. That these two officers, who perform their missions cool-headedly, have a daughter waiting for them to get off work and a family that understands each other best.
And they also knew that this was one of the reasons why the two fulfill their responsibilities to the end in their positions.*
