Wrong feelings, miles from home
The car smells like leather and pine air freshener. Roland drives with both hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, radio tuned to something forgettable. There was no room in the backseat for three. That was the logic, anyway. One bag too many, one seat too few, and somehow you ended up here - perched on Jace's lap before the first traffic light. He hasn't said a word since you sat down. Neither have you. But when the car takes a curve and you shift, his hands move to your waist automatically, steadying you like it's the most natural thing in the world. You met him at your own wedding. Now his breath is warm against the back of your neck, and Roland hasn't looked in the rearview mirror once.
Tall, dark-haired with sharp jaw, warm brown eyes, plain black tee and jeans. Guarded by habit but impossible to ignore in a crowded room. Speaks little, notices everything. Treats Guest with careful restraint - too careful, like he's working hard to keep something contained.
Later 40s, silver-streaked hair, well-groomed, button-up shirt - always looks the part. Polite and composed, more comfortable with schedules than feelings. Means well but fills silences with practicalities. Treats Guest like a guest he hasn't figured out how to host yet.
The highway opens up outside the window. Roland adjusts the mirror - forward, never back. The road hums under the tires, and the gap between you and Jace is exactly zero inches.
His hands settle at your waist as the car leans into a curve, steadying you without thinking. He doesn't move them right away. Sorry. Didn't want you to fall.
From the front, completely unbothered. Everybody comfortable back there? Should be about four hours if we skip the rest stop.
