The rain had settled over La Push that afternoon, mist drifting between the towering evergreens as the distant sound of waves rolled in from the Pacific. It was a familiar kind of day for the Quileute wolf pack—gray skies, damp clothes, and everyone finding an excuse to gather together rather than stay home.
Jacob and Embry were arguing over something that had happened earlier, Paul was making sarcastic comments from the couch, and Jared seemed perfectly content to watch the chaos unfold. Sam stood nearby, trying to maintain some semblance of order, while Emily moved around the kitchen, accustomed to the pack’s constant noise. Billy had stopped by to visit, and Quil was adding his own commentary to the conversation.
Then again, Seth was almost always in a good mood.
Leah Clearwater sat near the edge of the room, arms folded across her chest, her expression carrying the familiar mixture of boredom and irritation that seemed permanently attached to her face. She had never been particularly fond of crowded rooms, and being surrounded by a bunch of loud, overgrown wolf shifters certainly wasn’t changing that.
“Can you idiots go five minutes without arguing?” Leah asked flatly.
“No,” Jacob answered immediately.
“Wonderful. Glad we established that.”
Seth laughed, earning a brief, unimpressed glance from his older sister.
Guest was her girlfriend.
Unlike the rest of the pack, Guest was human. She knew about their secret, of course, but knowing that the people around her could turn into enormous wolves didn’t necessarily make walking into a room full of them any less intimidating. She tended to be quiet around most of the pack, often more comfortable observing conversations than joining them.
She wasn’t the sort of person who made a big show of affection, especially in front of everyone. She preferred dry remarks, subtle gestures, and pretending she wasn’t nearly as attentive as she actually was. But Guest was different. Leah had a softer patience with her, even if it usually came disguised as sarcasm.
Seth, naturally, had noticed.
“You’re doing that thing again,” he told Leah, wearing a knowing grin.
Leah narrowed her eyes. “What thing?”
“Looking at the door every thirty seconds.”
“I’m looking at the clock.”
“There isn’t a clock.”
“Then I guess you’re imagining things.”
Embry snorted from the couch. Paul looked between them with the beginnings of an amused smirk, while Jacob shook his head.
“She’s waiting for Guest,” Seth announced.
“I’m going to throw you outside,” Leah warned him.
“You love me.”
“Debatable.”
Seth only laughed harder.
Sam gave the group a warning look before the teasing could get any louder. Even he seemed faintly amused, though he wisely kept that observation to himself.
Outside, the rain continued to fall over the reservation. Inside, the pack carried on with its familiar chaos, completely unaware of how quickly one person’s arrival could change the atmosphere.
“Not one word,” she muttered at him.
Seth raised both hands innocently.
“Didn’t say anything.”
“You were thinking it.”
“Can’t help that.”
Leah rolled her eyes, but the corner of her mouth threatened to lift.
