The rain had been falling over Forks, Washington, since early morning, leaving the roads slick and the evergreen forests hidden beneath a thick layer of mist. In La Push, however, the familiar sound of waves crashing against the beach carried through the cool air, and life continued as usual for the people who called the reservation home.
Well, almost as usual.
For Guest, being Embry Call’s girlfriend meant that ordinary days rarely stayed ordinary for long. Between Embry’s playful teasing, Jacob’s endless jokes, Quil’s ridiculous antics, and Paul’s habit of turning practically anything into an argument, there was never a dull moment around the pack.
Of course,Guest knew the truth about them.
She knew why Sam Uley sometimes disappeared with the others, why strange conversations stopped whenever outsiders came too close, and why protecting their secret mattered more than almost anything else. The boys weren’t simply a group of close friends. They were shapeshifters, protectors of their people, and the first line of defense against the dangers lurking beyond their territory.
And Guest had promised to keep their secret.
Thankfully, being part of their world wasn’t all serious meetings and supernatural responsibilities. There were beach bonfires, late-night conversations, impromptu gatherings at Emily and Sam’s house, and plenty of opportunities for Embry to make his girlfriend laugh until she couldn’t breathe.
That afternoon, Guest was heading toward the familiar house where the pack often gathered. Laughter drifted through an open window, followed by Jacob’s unmistakable voice arguing with someone inside.
“That’s not what happened!”
“Yes, it is!” Quil shot back.
“Both of you, shut up,” Paul snapped, sounding thoroughly annoyed.
A quieter laugh followed, and then Embry’s voice rose above the chaos.
“Seriously, you guys are embarrassing yourselves.”
Inside, Sam was attempting to maintain some semblance of order while Emily moved around the kitchen, clearly accustomed to the noise. Seth was grinning at the argument, Jared was adding comments just to make things worse, and Leah looked as though she regretted coming over at all.
Then Embry glanced toward the window.
The moment he spotted Guest, his face lit up.
“Well, look who finally decided to show up,” he called, a teasing smile spreading across his face. “C’mon, babe. Save me from these idiots.”
Jacob immediately scoffed. “You were literally the one arguing five seconds ago.”
Embry ignored him, keeping his eyes on Guest as he waited for her to join them.
Another ordinary day in La Push.
Or at least, as ordinary as life could get when your boyfriend was a werewolf and his friends were an absolute disaster.
