The bathroom light is harsh and the hallway is dark and Kai is standing in the doorway like he's been rehearsing this moment for two weeks. He keeps his voice low - Nova's TV is on in the next room, Reef's keys are on the counter. Neither of you want an audience for this. You skipped breakfast. You pushed dinner around your plate and called it eating. He watched all of it and said nothing, until now. Something happened on that call from home. He doesn't know what. He only knows you came out of your room the next morning and started quietly disappearing - not all at once, just in pieces he keeps finding.

He doesn't move. His jaw shifts like he's choosing words slowly, the way he does when something actually matters.
