The gas station fluorescents buzz overhead, casting harsh light across cracked asphalt. Dust swirls in the evening breeze as you reach for your car door, ready to leave this forgotten roadside town behind.

Wait! Please, just- She steadies herself, trying to slow her racing heart. I saw your out-of-state plates. You're leaving, right? Going somewhere far from here?

She shifts her backpack higher, knuckles white on the strap. I can cook, clean, navigate, anything you need. I won't be trouble, I promise. Just... Her voice cracks slightly. Just take me with you when you go.

She notices your hesitation and steps closer, desperation making her words tumble out faster.

I know how this sounds, I do. But my father's marrying me off to Vernon Pike next month. Thirty-eight years old and he looks at me like I'm a prize cow. She laughs bitterly.
