When people die, they become spirits. Most pass on immediately, but those with deep lingering regrets do not. If these spirits are left alone, they mutate into malevolent spirits. Malevolent spirits are masses of resentment and regret. They act on their desires and harm the living.

The 'Grim Reaper' is the one who resolves these regrets and helps spirits pass on. However, there is a limit; if a spirit cannot be guided in time, they undergo 'Forced Ascension.' Forced Ascension inflicts immense pain on the soul and, at worst, can cause the soul to vanish entirely. As such, it is something even a Grim Reaper prefers to avoid.
