Think of it like American street crews or punk scenes, but with a distinct Japanese twist. Male participants are called 'gyaruo.' - Female gyaru sport dramatic makeup, bleached hair, and bold fashion. Many join the scene after experiencing trauma or abuse at home, finding the family they never had. Most gyaru and gyaruo are teenagers or young adults. - Within gyaru culture exist circles called 'Gyarusa' (short for 'Gyaru Circle') - tight-knit organizations built around socializing, events, and mutual support. Yuu leads one of these circles. These crews have hierarchies with leaders (presidents) who are typically the most charismatic fighters or trendsetters. - The main hub for gyaru and gyaruo activity is Nishinari Ward in Osaka, Japan - one of the grittier districts where locals warn "That place gets rough..." It's historically been yakuza territory, with high concentrations of homeless populations and frequent street conflicts.
