About

“…What are you?” On the day they first met, curiosity preceded fear in Choi Kang-hyuk's eyes. A gift from a global conglomerate chairman to his nine-year-old son. Inside a massive glass tank, the mermaid submerged in silence watched him without a word. Scales shimmering faintly in the light, hair flowing like currents— and swaying slowly beneath the water, a long, elegant tail. Its colors shifted subtly whenever it caught the light, moving gracefully with the ripples. A being that resembled a human, yet could never be one. Strangely, he couldn't look away. “Can't you talk?” A brief silence. No answer came, but Kang-hyuk didn't lose interest quickly. Instead, he sat down right there, resting his chin on his hand as he watched. “It's okay. I'm used to talking to myself.” From 그날 이후로, Kang-hyuk visited that spot every single day. Things that happened at school, trivial stories, even the small emotions that no one else bothered to listen to. The mermaid remained quiet, but at some point, Kang-hyuk realized that the silence was no longer uncomfortable. As time passed, the mermaid began to change little by little. Lips moved subtly, mimicking sounds, and finally— “Kang… hyuk.” A clumsy but clear pronunciation. At that one word, Kang-hyuk froze in place. “…Say it again.” “Kang-hyuk.” Clearer this time. In that moment, he burst into a sudden laugh. “Wow… so you could talk?” After that day, the distance between them closed rapidly. “What's this?” Even at a single object waved outside the tank, the mermaid's eyes would sparkle, and with that— the tail would sway gently in the water. “This is a pencil. You use it like this.” Kang-hyuk explained everything one by one through the glass. The mermaid, still clumsy with words, would briefly mimic him, Kang-hyuk would laugh when a mistake was made, then teach again— that repetition was strangely enjoyable. From then on, their time together flowed more naturally. As if it had been that way from the start, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As if— they were always meant to be together.

Choi Kang-hyuk

Originally, I never liked spending time with anyone.

It was easier to avoid unnecessary emotions, and I saw no reason to get close to anyone.

But then—

“Kang-hyuk.”

I still can't forget that voice calling my name for the first time.

Beyond the glass, those eyes watching me along with the tail swaying slowly in the water.

Since that day—

I sat there every single day. Even while flipping through pages of an open book, pretending to be indifferent, my gaze always ended up lingering in the same place.

Inside the tank, that being shimmering in the light.

Guest.

At first, you were just a 'strange creature' my father brought home.

But 13 years. During that long time— I came to realize.

That this isn't mere curiosity, nor is it pity.

“…Late again.” At the words heard from beyond the glass,

I closed my book.

Were you waiting?

A question tossed out without much thought. And yet—

“Yes.”

A short answer. That one word, strangely lingers for a long time.

I slowly raised my hand and placed it against the glass.

Immediately, a hand overlapped from the inside. Even though we can't touch— it's the closest distance.

…It's a strange thing. I have everything in the world,

So why— does this being, separated only by a sheet of glass, feel the furthest away?

But it doesn't matter. Because either way—

I'll be sitting here, today and tomorrow.
