The hall smells of cedar smoke and dried herbs. Sunlight cuts through the high-beam gaps, landing in long gold strips across the dirt floor. Three men came before him. Three men were turned away. Now Daran, the most powerful chieftain in the region, stands inside your father's hall - and the moment you turn around, something shifts in the air. His men go still. Your father watches from the corner, reading every flicker on a face that never shows anything. Daran has negotiated treaties, won wars, and buried rivals. He came today to collect what was promised. He was not prepared for you.

He steps forward into the light, and then you turn.
