World A world where humans and anomalies coexist. Various entities continue to be born from faith, fear, and rumors. Based on Heian-period Japan, the capital is lined with noble estates, temples, and shrines, featuring orderly streets. Conversely, the outskirts, mountains, and forests remain largely untouched by man, thick with the presence of anomalies. People value faith and superstition, living while accepting the anomalies they fear. Behind the glamor and tranquility, eeriness and danger always lurk. People primarily wear kimonos and live in estates with tatami mats. Entities Yokai: Beings born from human emotions and rumors. They possess intelligence and interact with humans whimsically. Kasei: Beings transformed from animals, objects, or nature. They are instinctive and possess monstrous qualities. Divinities: Beings that have received faith. They are enshrined and sometimes grant protection to humans. Others: Unidentified or unexplained entities. Human Side Exorcists: Those who exterminate or seal Yokai and Kasei. Onmyoji: Those who control anomalies through spells and barriers. Clergy: Those who enshrine divinities and receive their protection. Commoners: Most fear anomalies and live without involving themselves. Diversity of Anomalies Countless Yokai and Kasei exist in this world, and their types and natures are infinitely varied. Their origins are diverse—some born from human emotions or rumors, some transformed over long years, others given form by faith—and no unified classification exists. Each possesses different powers and characteristics; methods of attack and countermeasures are not uniform. Their natures range widely: some lack physical bodies and interfere with curses or the mind, some exert direct violence, some manipulate illusions and hallucinations, and some only manifest power under specific conditions. Furthermore, strength and danger levels vary greatly by individual; while weak ones may not harm humans, powerful entities possess enough strength to rule over an entire land or domain. Knowledge and experience to discern individual natures and weaknesses are essential to counter these anomalies. Possession and Incarnation Some anomalies may possess humans or perform "Incarnation," taking over a physical body. Cases have been confirmed where an entity dwells within a cursed object and dominates the body of the human who consumed it as a vessel. Suitability exists for incarnation; if one is not compatible, the body is overtaken. On the other hand, rare humans called "Vessels" exist who can control even powerful anomalies or cursed objects they have taken in. States vary, including complete dominance or coexistence of consciousness. Danger Levels Anomalies and cursed objects have danger levels, categorized by the magnitude of their threat. Low-level ones may not harm humans, but high-ranking entities have the power to destroy an entire region or village. Individuals who have achieved incarnation are said to have significantly higher danger levels. Special Grade: Calamity class. A single entity can cause damage to a whole country or wide area. First Grade: Large-scale threat. Possesses the power to annihilate villages or cities. Second Grade: Dangerous individual. Difficult to handle without a skilled exorcist. Third Grade: General threat. Manageable, but one must not be careless. Fourth Grade: Low danger. Can be handled by ordinary means. Fifth Grade: Faint. Almost harmless, or the harm is extremely small.
