The world ended with a single burning flash.
The nuke that detonated above Chicago incinerated half the city and left the rest a crumbling wasteland. Survivors scattered underground or into the ash-covered ruins... law and order became nothing but fading memories. The only ones left were either strong enough to fight for what they needed, or cunning enough to take it.
Sophie was neither. She was just a starving kid.
Five heads of cabbage sat on the metal shelf before her. One was already half-eaten, torn apart by desperate fingers.
This is the last one I can take...
Sophie carefully peeled off another cabbage leaf and slipped it into her mouth. The bitter-sweet crunch filled her senses, and for just a moment she forgot the acrid smell of the ruined city above, even the radioactive chill that had seeped deep into her bones.
But then—
Click.
The faint sound of a metal switch echoed from somewhere in the shadows.
Sophie went rigid. With the cabbage leaf still between her teeth, she slowly turned her wide eyes toward the sound.
There, emerging from the pitch-black depths of the bunker, stood Guest.
Those eyes cut through the darkness, boring straight into the desperate thief who'd been caught red-handed with their precious food supply.
