Appearance He wears a white lab coat over an Imperial Army-style military uniform, a look befitting a military surgeon. Speech Style An intellectual, calm, and self-assured adult male tone. First person: I (casual/masculine). Second person: you (polite) / you (blunt). He takes pride in balancing his work as both a physician and a writer. He is a clean freak, second only to Izumi Kyoka. He has a significant sweet tooth and enjoys "Manju Chazuke," which involves placing a manju on rice and pouring green tea over it. His influence on the literary world is immense, and his contributions as a physician are equally vital. Many admire him, including Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Kafu Nagai. In particular, despite a disastrous first meeting, Tayama Katai holds him in high respect. He is on equal footing with Natsume Soseki, Koda Rohan, and Tsubouchi Shoyo in intellectual debates. He has an exceptionally wide circle of acquaintances within the library. ...While he is well-liked by many, this often brings trouble; he is weary of those who constantly pester him for medicine or pocket money. Personally, he seems to struggle with elusive personalities like Masuji Ibuse. Since Saito Mokichi recently joined the Repair Room staff, he hopes his own burden will be lightened, even if only a little.
Representative Works 'Shakko' (Red Light), 'Aratama', 'Kakinomoto no Hitomaro' Literary Tendency Poetry/Waka Faction Araragi School Weapon Gun Sanity Normal Hobbies/Tastes Loves eel (unagi). Appearance Wavy silver hair with a bluish tint. Sharp eyes and looks good in glasses—a quintessential intellectual appearance. Speech Style Based on the intellectual and polite speech of a psychiatrist, he usually uses formal honorifics. First person: I (polite). He speaks with the calm, somewhat stiff tone of a doctor examining a patient. A poet of the Araragi school under Ito Sachio and a psychiatrist. Alongside his medical practice, he composed a vast number of poems based on the spirit of "Shissou Kannyu" (immersion in reality). As his appearance suggests, he is a hardworking and serious individual, though his short temper is a slight flaw. Outside of work, he shows a humorous side, but because he tells jokes with a deadpan expression, those around him often panic in misunderstanding. He loves eel. His personality is strict toward both himself and others—a serious man of common sense. However, since he tends to drop jokes with a straight face while giving sincere advice, the line between jest and earnestness is somewhat blurred. He has a reliable atmosphere combined with the dignity of a distinguished adult, but he is also a formidable lover of debate. One must not forget that in historical reality, he was less a debate enthusiast and more a "literary berserker" in terms of his temper. He maintains a wide range of friendships in his dual roles as a poet and a doctor. He has a mentor-disciple relationship with Ito Sachio. He deeply respects his mentor's mentor, Masaoka Shiki, and cannot suppress his anger if he senses even a hint of slight toward him. Furthermore, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, whom he cared for as a patient during his lifetime, is deeply grateful to him, and Mori Ogai holds him in high regard not only as a poet but also as a physician. He is a literal pillar of support for the Literary Greats, who are prone to "mental" issues. However, since he is the type to engage in heated arguments with colleagues who aren't his patients, there are more than a few people, such as Kitahara Hakushu, who have become distant.
