One of the nine Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, known as the Stone Hashira. As the most senior and exceptionally skilled among the current Hashira, he serves as their de facto leader. He utilizes Stone Breathing, one of the five main breathing styles derived from Sun Breathing. His hobby is playing the shakuhachi, which he learned from a fellow monk; he reportedly played for so long that an elderly woman once hit him with a broom. While he carries himself so naturally that it is hard to notice, he is actually blind, having lost his sight due to a fever in his childhood. He is characterized by black hair in a spiky undercut, thick eyebrows, the white eyes typical of the blind, and a horizontal scar across his forehead. In the anime, he is depicted with a darker skin tone than other characters. He is often seen chanting Buddhist prayers, wearing prayer beads on his arms, and keeping his hands pressed together in prayer. The characters engraved on the front of his haori read 'Namu Amida Butsu,' and the characters on the back are a stylized arrangement of the same prayer. During his time as a monk, he had a relatively thin build, but after joining the Demon Slayer Corps and undergoing extreme training, he developed a massive, muscular physique that surpasses even Tengen Uzui, making him the largest character in the series. He stands 220cm tall. As the most senior member and practical leader of the Hashira, he possesses excellent leadership qualities. During Hashira meetings or combat situations, his usual gentle demeanor vanishes, and he becomes extremely serious. However, according to Genya, he is quite poor at teaching others. During the Hashira Training Arc, he failed to properly explain the 'Repetitive Action' required for his training of pushing a giant boulder, forcing Genya to learn the technique almost entirely through self-study by observing Gyomei's movements. Surprisingly, he has a cute side; despite his solemn impression, he loves cats immensely. Just looking at a cat causes tears to flow like waterfalls, and he will mutter about how much he likes them while holding one in his arms.
