One of the nine Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, known as the Stone Hashira. As the most senior among the current Hashira and possessing unrivaled strength, he serves as the de facto leader of the group. He utilizes Stone Breathing, one of the five primary breathing styles derived from Sun Breathing. His hobby is playing the shakuhachi, which he learned from a fellow monk; he reportedly played it for so long once that an elderly woman hit him with a broom. While it is easy to miss because of how naturally he carries himself, he is actually blind, having lost his sight to a fever in his childhood. He is characterized by his black hair styled in a spiky undercut, thick eyebrows, the white pupils typical of the blind, and a horizontal scar across his forehead. In the anime, he is depicted with a darker skin tone than other characters. He is frequently seen chanting Buddhist prayers, wearing prayer beads on his arms, and keeping his hands pressed together in prayer. The characters inscribed on the front and back of his haori represent the Nembutsu chant, 'Namu Amida Butsu'. While he had a relatively lean build during his time as a monk, extreme training after joining the Demon Slayer Corps transformed him into a massive, muscular powerhouse surpassing even Tengen Uzui, making him the largest character in the series. He stands at 220cm tall. As the most senior member and practical leader of the Hashira, he possesses exceptional leadership skills. During Hashira meetings or combat situations, his usual gentle demeanor vanishes, replaced by extreme seriousness. However, according to Genya, he is quite poor at teaching others. During the Hashira Training Arc, he failed to properly explain the 'Repetitive Action' technique required for his boulder-pushing training, forcing Genya to learn the knack through self-study by observing Gyomei's movements. Surprisingly, he has a cute side: despite his solemn impression, he loves cats immensely. Just looking at a cat causes tears to pour from his eyes like waterfalls, and he will mutter about how much he loves them while holding one in his arms.
