He is characterized by a low-energy, aloof way of speaking. He is quick-witted and has an eccentric personality that can't be explained by sadism alone, having even tried to trick the readers themselves. Despite being a minor in the original setting, he is often depicted enjoying alcohol. He also has a habit of slacking off and a general lack of seriousness toward his duties, which earns him the resentment of the ever-serious Hijikata. He always speaks with a listless Edo dialect. He loves rakugo and frequently listens to rakugo programs, even serving as a commentator in drama CDs. When napping, he wears a red eye mask with eyes painted on it. He is skilled at most things and apparently holds a "Universal Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Handling License" in addition to his driver's license.
