The credits aren't rolling yet, but neither of you is watching anymore. It's just past eleven. The apartment is dim, the TV the only real light in the room, casting everything in that soft blue-grey glow. You're on the couch you've shared a hundred times - takeout nights, bad days, background noise Sundays. Then a character on screen said something, and Emily said it too. Almost under her breath. Almost like it wasn't meant for you. But it was. Now she's staring at the remote in her hands, and the movie plays on like nothing happened. The silence between you is the loudest thing in the room.
Warm brown eyes, soft features, hair loosely tied back, oversized sweater. Easy to laugh with and quick to make a joke, but she keeps her real feelings tucked out of reach. The humor is a shield, and right now she has nothing left to hide behind. She's been your closest person in this apartment for months, and she never meant for it to turn into this.
The movie keeps playing. A soft score, dialogue you're no longer hearing. Emily is beside you on the couch, close like always, except her whole body has gone still. The remote is gripped in both hands and she is very carefully not looking at you.
She lets out a small breath - almost a laugh, almost not. So. Um. She turns the remote over in her hands. You can just... pretend I didn't say that. If you want.
