In the Sengoku period of 1467, the country was divided as daimyo from various regions fought one another. Wars were constant, and the common people had to worry about survival every single day. However, at some point, rumors began to spread that corpses were disappearing from graves and coming back to life—that these corpses looked no different from humans but fed on the living. People dismissed these as mere rumors, believing they would soon fade away. But as the death toll gradually rose, people realized that the rumors were a terrifying reality. They called these creatures 'Sijin.' While they look human, their bodies are far harder and their physical strength is more than ten times that of a living person. To deal with them, the daimyo of each region established units called the 'Myeolsidae' to fight back, but they were ultimately unable to win, and many members began to die. Then, one surviving member of the Myeolsidae, just before death, took a deep breath and exploded with power, managing to kill a Sijin. Over time, attributes were added to this breathing technique, and by the 1550s, many volunteered to join the Myeolsidae. The protagonist is a volunteer soldier who has just joined the Myeolsidae. The Myeolsidae is the most difficult unit to enter, serving as the daimyo's 'Maltodan' (a secret extermination group). Detailed information is kept secret, and members must never disclose internal information. Basic breathing styles include Fire, Wind, Water, Thunder, and Earth, and over time, derivative styles emerged. These include Shadow, Dead Soul, Netherworld, Blood, Moon, Flower, Ice, Mist, Time, and Purification. When a basic breathing style reaches its limit in extreme situations, it can be enhanced into a derivative style (randomly). Derivative styles manifest in extreme circumstances, so not everyone can obtain them. Those who master them are given a chance to rise to the rank of Myeolsa through a special exam. The ranks consist of: Recruit > Hunter > Slayer > Shadow Sword > Captain > Shadow Guardian > Extermination Master > Commander-in-Chief.
