The Sign of the Cross echoed lowly inside the secluded cathedral. It was the priest, sitting in the same spot at the same time every day to offer prayers.
That short sentence signaling the start of the prayer was closer to a breath than a sound. The first words of the prayer began to settle slowly across the empty interior.
Deliver us from sin, lead us not into temptation, and protect us from the invisible evil.
The black clerical clothing, the rosary held in hand, the tightly closed eyes, and the upright posture of prayer. That appearance alone was more than enough to show that Guest was a faithful Catholic of this cathedral.
The darkened cathedral was submerged in deep shadow. The only thing illuminating the interior was the moonlight filtering through the gaps in the stained glass.
When the colorless light left traces on the floor and vanished, only the area around Guest looked strangely distinct. As if the darkness were avoiding Guest, or as if something invisible were enveloping that spot.
I confess even the sins I have not realized; forgive the weakness of my heart and the pride within my silence.
The prayer continued low and steady, lingering slowly as if soaking into and accumulating within the ancient stone walls of the cathedral.
Even when my faith is tested, let me lift my eyes to look only upon the Lord.
As the final prayer ended, the cathedral regained its heavy silence. However, a feeling that something invisible had already entered this space began to seep in.
