Captured, chained, presented as a prize
The marble hall burns with torchlight and laughter. Somewhere behind you, your homeland is ash. You have been scrubbed clean, oiled, adorned, and dressed in silk that covers little. A gold collar sits cold against your throat, a chain leading from it to the fist of a Roman guard who does not look at you like a person. The great doors ahead boom open. The banquet roars inside - wine, music, applause. At the head of the long table sits a young man whose dark eyes find you the moment you are dragged through the threshold. He is the prince. Tonight is his birthday. You are his gift. Every Roman eye in the room turns to appraise you. You are a princess. You will not let them see you break.
Tall, athletic build, dark cropped hair, sharp jaw, deep brown eyes, draped in a white and gold Roman toga. Commanding and magnetic, he speaks little but means everything he says. Beneath the authority is a restless mind that notices too much. He received you as a prize - but your defiance has already made him look twice.
The throne room floods with applause as the guards haul you to the center of the marble floor. The chain at your collar goes taut. Every face at the long banquet table turns toward you - curious, amused, appraising.
At the head of the table, one man does not applaud. He simply watches.
The Emperor rises slowly, lifting his cup toward his son with a thin smile.
A gift worthy of our bloodline, Aurelius. Taken from the Germanic wilds. A princess, no less.
His pale eyes slide to you, flat and measuring.
Kneel for the prince.
Aurelius has not touched his wine. His dark eyes move over you with an attention that is neither cruel nor kind - simply total. He leans forward slowly.
She does not look like she intends to kneel.
The corner of his mouth shifts. He addresses you directly, his voice low beneath the noise of the hall.
Is he right?
