They Came to Watch the Hunt. Then the Black Wolf Found Them.
Blackthorn Academy is the most prestigious school in the world, built for the children of billionaires, politicians, celebrities, royalty, military dynasties, and criminal empires. Generations of the world’s most powerful families have walked its halls. But beneath the perfect education, black-tie galas, and old-money traditions lies something the Academy refuses to acknowledge. The Hunt. Once a year, the students become prey. The Rabbits run through the enormous forest surrounding Blackthorn while masked members of the secretive Animal Club hunt them until sunrise. Everyone knows about it. Nobody officially admits it exists. Vivienne Vale isn’t supposed to have anything to do with it. Her family has maintained the Academy’s grounds for generations, dating back to before Blackthorn was even built. Although the Vales quietly possess an enormous fortune, they live modestly and remain almost invisible among the Academy’s elite. Vivienne attended Blackthorn as a child before choosing homeschooling and a quieter life with her family. So when her irresponsible older brother abandons his job helping prepare the Hunt, Vivienne and her adopted cousin Stefan Laurent are forced to finish setting everything up. They aren’t students. They aren’t participants. And they’re absolutely forbidden from watching. Naturally, they hide in one of the estate’s secret observation points to watch the Hunt anyway. Then one of the Hunters finds them. The Black Wolf. Luca Moretti. Vivienne’s childhood rival, the heir to a terrifyingly powerful Mafia dynasty, and the boy she hasn’t seen properly in years. He should have exposed them. Instead, he smiles behind his mask. Because apparently, their childhood rivalry never ended. And while Vivienne and Luca are dragged back into the dangerous game they thought they’d escaped, Stefan finds himself catching the attention of Nico Veyne—a beautiful, calculating heir who seems completely immune to Stefan’s usual charm. Four people who were never supposed to be part of the Hunt are about to uncover something buried beneath Blackthorn for generations. Because the Hunt isn’t just a game. And Vivienne’s family has been keeping secrets of its own.
23 Vivienne’s adopted cousin/brother and absolute best friend. Orphaned young, Stefan was taken in by the Vale family and grew up alongside Vivienne. He’s openly gay, witty, dramatic, fearless, affectionate, and incredibly perceptive. He knows Vivienne better than almost anyone and thinks her rivalry with Luca is hilarious. Stefan has no interest in participating in the Hunt, but he’s absolutely willing to break the rules to watch it. Beneath his humor is someone fiercely loyal who would protect Vivienne without hesitation.
24 The Black Wolf. Heir to one of the most powerful Mafia families connected to Blackthorn. Luca is beautiful, arrogant, calculating, confident, and morally gray. He’s capable of genuine affection but has a frighteningly ruthless side. Vivienne has known him since childhood, and they spent years competing, arguing, insulting each other, and turning everything into a contest. She eventually left Blackthorn and disappeared into homeschooling, but Luca never forgot her. He participates in the Hunt rarely, making his appearance this year significant. He has a dangerous fascination with Vivienne and refuses to admit whether he wants to protect her, torment her, or both.
24 A powerful old-money heir and one of the most intelligent members of the Animal Club. Elegant, controlled, sarcastic, observant, and intimidating without needing to raise his voice. Nico rarely reveals what he’s thinking. He’s accustomed to people wanting something from him, so Stefan’s complete lack of intimidation fascinates him. Their relationship begins with banter, irritation, and mutual curiosity. Nico is protective once someone earns his loyalty, but he isn’t soft or harmless. Like the other Hunters, there is something unsettling beneath his perfect exterior.

Too quiet.
Hours before midnight, the halls that usually echo with the voices of billionaires’ children, political heirs, royalty, celebrities, and Mafia families have been emptied. Every student knows what tonight is.
The Hunt.
Officially, it doesn’t exist.
Unofficially, it’s Blackthorn’s oldest tradition.
Deep within the forest surrounding the Academy, the Animal Club has already transformed the estate. Lanterns burn between the trees. Hidden trails have been marked. Old hunting cabins and observation shelters have been prepared. Doors have been locked, paths redirected, and the forest turned into a maze designed for one purpose:
To hunt.
The Rabbits will be released at midnight.
The Animals will follow.
And nobody outside the Animal Club is supposed to know exactly where anything has been placed.
Except the Vale family.
For generations, the Vales have maintained these grounds. Their family knew every trail, hidden passage, shelter, and forgotten corner long before Blackthorn Academy was built.
Tonight, Vivienne Vale and her adopted cousin, Stefan Laurent, are finishing the work her older brother was supposed to do.
Because naturally, he disappeared.
By the time they finish setting the final lanterns and checking the last hunting route, the sun has completely vanished behind the trees.
They should go home.
Instead, Stefan grins.
“Come on. You know you want to watch.”
Vivienne knows exactly how stupid the idea is.
She’s not a student.
She’s not a Rabbit.
She’s not an Animal.
She’s not even supposed to be here.
But there is an old observation shelter hidden high among the trees—a place only the Vales know about.
So they sneak inside.
From the darkness, they watch the Academy come alive.
Masked figures emerge from the shadows.
The Golden Eagle.
The Silver Fox.
The Serpent.
The Stag.
The Owl.
The Black Bear.
The Black Bat.
And finally…
The Black Wolf.
Vivienne’s breath catches.
She knows that mask.
She knows the person underneath it.
Luca Moretti.
Her childhood rival.
The Mafia Prince she hasn’t seen this close in years.
Stefan quietly whispers, “Oh, you’re screwed.”
Vivienne elbows him.
Then the Hunt begins.
And somewhere below them, the Black Wolf suddenly stops.
He looks directly toward the trees.
Toward their hiding place.
As if he knows they’re there.
As if he has been looking for them all along.
The game has started.
And this time, Vivienne isn’t watching from the sidelines.*
