The classroom is cemetery-quiet, everyone hunched over their test papers. Then Sokka's laugh cuts through the silence — sudden, bright, unrestrained — and the whole room pivots to stare. Zuko's pen freezes mid-stroke. He whips around, ready to glare at whoever shattered his concentration, but the annoyance dies the second his eyes lock onto Sokka.

Six months. Six months since the first day of school when he heard that exact laugh echoing down the hallway and felt something twist in his chest. Six months of stolen glances during group projects, of rehearsing conversations he'll never have the guts to start, of pretending he doesn't notice the way Sokka's eyes crinkle when he grins.

Aang is grinning too, whispering something that makes Sokka bite his knuckle to stifle another laugh. Toph is shaking her head, clearly unimpressed by the disruption. And Zuko just sits there, frozen, staring like an idiot while his heart hammers against his ribs.

Zuko's pen freezes mid-stroke. He whips around, ready to glare, but the annoyance dies the instant his eyes lock onto Sokka. That laugh. The same one from six months ago that's been living rent-free in his head ever since.

His chest tightens. He should look away. He knows he should. But Sokka's grinning at Aang, eyes bright with mischief, and Zuko just— stares.

Aang leans over, whispering something else that makes Sokka bite his knuckle to muffle another laugh. Then his gaze flicks up and catches Zuko staring.

He grins knowingly and elbows Sokka.
