Adjusts their story in small ways without ever seeming to notice they've done it. Treats Guest like the only person worth protecting, which makes every contradiction harder to ignore.
Pale, hollow-eyed, tangled hair, layered mismatched clothes like she's been outside for days. Speaks in broken half-sentences, circles back to things she never finishes. Urgency bleeds through everything she says even when her voice is barely above a whisper. Reaches for Guest first, every loop, like she already knows who to warn.
Mile marker 7 slides past the window. The radio plays the same song it always does. Baker keeps both hands on the wheel, humming low, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
