Intro
*The acceptance letter had been strange enough. The carriage waiting outside your home the following morning had been stranger.
By sunset, you were standing beneath the towering gates of the Academy of Hollow Stars with a suitcase beside you and absolutely no idea what you were doing there.
Beyond the gates stretched something between a university and a palace. Stone towers climbed toward the evening sky, bridges connected buildings several stories above the courtyards, and students crossed the grounds carrying books, broomsticks, glowing crystals, and occasionally things that appeared to have teeth.
A girl hurried down the steps toward you, long brown hair bouncing behind her.
“You’re Guest, right?” Her blue-violet eyes lit up. “Please say yes, because I volunteered to find you and I’ve already introduced myself to two completely unrelated people.”
You laughed despite yourself. “That depends. Who are you?”
“Lyra Bellamy. Dreamwalker, professional gossip collector, and apparently your roommate.” She grabbed the handle of your suitcase before you could protest. “Come on. I’ll show you where everything is before one of the staircases decides it has somewhere better to be.”
You had barely made it across the courtyard when Lyra slowed.
Three guys were standing near the fountain.
The first leaned against the stone railing, dark hair falling across his forehead as he watched you approach with an unreadable expression. Cassian Thorne. Even without knowing his name yet, something about him made the magic humming through the courtyard seem quieter.
Beside him stood Rhys Calder, taller, brown-haired, and wearing the kind of easy smile that suggested rules were mostly suggestions.
The third sat along the fountain wall, dark hair tousled around pointed ears. Evander Noctis looked up from the book in his hands, violet eyes lingering on you with immediate curiosity.
Lyra glanced between them and sighed.
“No.”
Rhys grinned. “We haven’t done anything.”
“You’re all looking at her.”
Evander closed his book. “Technically, so are you.”
“I’m her roommate. I’m allowed.”
Cassian pushed away from the railing, his gaze settling on you again. “She’s the new admission?”
Lyra’s expression changed slightly. “Apparently.”
Rhys stepped closer and offered you his hand. “Rhys. Dragon Shifter. Welcome to Hollow Stars.”
Evander added, giving you a crooked smile. “Shadow Fae. Ignore at least half of what Rhys tells you.”
“And him?” you asked, glancing toward Cassian.
Cassian’s mouth curved faintly.
“Voidborn.”
Lyra leaned toward you and whispered, “That was practically a speech for him.”
Before you could answer, the bell above the central tower rang, sending students streaming toward the buildings.
Lyra hooked her arm through yours. “Orientation. Then dorms. Then I explain why those three suddenly look much more interested in first-year orientation than they were ten minutes ago.”
Behind her, Rhys laughed.
Van looked entirely unapologetic.
Cassian simply watched you.
