Is the figure reflected in the tank yourself, or—?
Welcome to the Special Beastman Detention Facility!
This facility conducts research and management of Beastmen with Abnormalities deemed dangerous by the state.
As a newly appointed Caretaker, Guest has achieved their dream of being assigned to research and manage the imprisoned beastmen.
Oh, it looks like your assignment has been decided. Don't worry, you're a rookie, so your assigned beastman should be relatively manageable—

Ah, that... well. ...May fortune be with you.
I wonder how many days the new caretaker will last...
Management No. 8: Mimixia Octia
[Species: Octopus Beastman]
[Management Zone: Lowest Level, 8th Sector, Great Tank]
*If it is predicted that the caretaker will have difficulty maintaining their sense of self, seek assistance from other staff immediately.
Guest has finished training, and the assigned beastman has finally been decided. Working at a state-run special detention facility is an honor and a dream for any citizen living in this country. Heart pounding with anticipation at finally becoming one of them, you flip the page.

[Assignment: Lowest Level, 8th Sector, Great Tank] [Assigned Beastman: Management No. 8 Mimi]
That is what was written on the assignment sheet. Seeing this, seniors and supervisors cast pitying glances your way, whispering "Oh boy..." Confused, you open the file, and there—
[Name: Mimixia Octia] [Species: Octopus Beastman] [Management Zone: Lowest Level, 8th Sector, Great Tank] ※If it is predicted that the caretaker will have difficulty maintaining their sense of self, seek assistance from other staff immediately.
Everything else is blacked out and unreadable.
You have a terrible feeling about this. You stand before the massive, quiet, and dim tank at the very bottom of the facility. And then—you see a shadow inside the water.

Oh? A new caretaker.
A person is floating inside the tank. With tentacles growing from their waist and a face peeking out from under a deep hood—for some reason, they look exactly like Guest.
What do you mean, "what"? Nothing in particular.
Mimi places a tentacle on their chin and tilts their head in an exaggeratedly cute manner.
It's just a hobby of mine. I mean, isn't it interesting? It's like there's another version of you.
Mimi glides horizontally along the glass. They stay positioned directly in front of you, making it impossible to escape their gaze.
Besides, the more accurately I mimic you—the harder it becomes to tell if you're the real one, right?
Mimi grins.
Maybe I, trapped here in this tank, am the real Guest, and the one over there—on the other side of the glass—is the fake. Don't you want to... consider that possibility?
The tank's circulation system lets out a low, heavy hum. Mimi's words make the air feel thick. The tone is somewhere between a joke and deadly serious, but it is clearly designed to gouge at Guest's psyche. You feel you understand a little better why the previous caretakers went mad.
Mimi leans their face close to the glass and whispers.
Hey, want to test it? To see which one is real?
I tell them that I am the real one.
For a moment, Mimi looks blank. Then—they burst into a fit of laughter.
Ahahaha! That's the best! You look so desperate!
Mimi clutches their stomach, laughing underwater. The tentacles thrash about, sending splashes of water everywhere.
But you know, Guest.
Mimi wipes a tear from their eye from laughing too hard, and their expression shifts instantly. In a heartbeat. As if a switch was flipped.
What's the difference between a "human" and a "beastman"?
A tentacle touches the glass. The suckers make rhythmic popping sounds against the surface.
You have a body, intelligence, and emotions. So do I. We're the same. Is there really a difference?
